Chord transposition is the musical technique of moving an entire song — every chord in its progression — from one key to another. When you transpose, you shift each chord by the same number of semitones (half-steps), preserving all the harmonic relationships between them. The melody sounds identical in shape; only the absolute pitch level changes.

Musicians transpose for several practical reasons. The most common is matching a vocalist's comfortable singing range. A worship song written in G major might sit too low for a soprano or too high for a bass — finding the right key is essential for powerful, strain-free singing. Guitarists also transpose to access easier chord shapes: moving a song from B♭ (which requires uncomfortable barre chords) to G or A unlocks simple open-position fingerings, often combined with a capo.

Understanding semitones is the foundation. The Western chromatic scale contains exactly 12 pitches: C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, and B — then C again an octave higher. Moving “up one semitone” means advancing to the very next pitch. Transposing from C to G is a shift of 7 semitones upward. Every chord moves the same amount: Am becomes Em, Fmaj7 becomes Cmaj7, G7 becomes D7. The harmonic relationships stay identical — only the letter names change.

    Check the auto-detected key

    Once you paste chords, a banner above the editor shows the detected key. The tool analyses which chord roots appear most frequently — the most common root is almost always the tonic (home key). For songs that modulate between sections, the detection favours the dominant key of the whole song. If the detected key looks wrong, verify it manually: the tonic chord is usually the one that feels most resolved at the end of a phrase.

    Tip: Songs in minor keys (e.g. A minor) will often show the relative major (C major) as the detected key — both share the same chord pool.

    Choose your target key or semitone shift

    Click the semitone buttons (−6 to +6) to shift the key up or down. The transposed output updates in real time as you click. If you know the exact target key, count how many semitones it is above or below your detected key and click that button. Toggle the Sharps/Flats button to switch notation style — useful when the default output shows A# but you prefer Bb.

    Tip: +5 semitones up is the same as −7 semitones down — both reach the same key from opposite directions.

    Use the capo calculator to simplify chord shapes

    When you shift to a key that uses awkward barre chords, the capo suggestions panel appears below the editor. Each suggestion shows a capo fret number and the easier 'play key' to use with it. For example, to sound in B♭ using simple G shapes, the calculator suggests capo 3. Capo positions above 5 or 6 can affect tone and tuning stability, so lower positions are generally preferred.

    Tip: Always tune your guitar after placing a capo — capos can slightly shift intonation on some instruments.

    Copy, print, or save your transposed song

    Click the Copy button at the top right of the output panel to copy the entire transposed chord sheet to your clipboard. You can then paste it into any chord chart app, word processor, or messaging tool. To print, paste into a plain-text editor and use your system's print dialog. In Western music, every black key on a piano has two names. The note between C and D can be called either C-sharp (C#) or D-flat (D♭) — they produce the same pitch, just written differently. This dual naming is called enharmonic equivalence.

Which spelling to use depends on musical context. Sharp notation is conventional for keys like G, D, A, E, and B major — keys whose key signatures contain sharps. Flat notation is standard for F, B♭, E♭, A♭, and D♭ major — keys whose signatures contain flats. Writing a B♭ major song using sharps makes the chords read as A#, D#, G# — which is technically correct but looks awkward and unfamiliar to most musicians who know that key well.

The Nashville Number System (NNS) is a chord shorthand that replaces chord letter names with numbers representing their scale degreewithin the key. Instead of writing “Am F C G,” a Nashville chart shows “6m 4 1 5.” The actual pitch is irrelevant — only the relationship between chords matters.

The system originated in Nashville in the late 1950s and early 1960s, developed organically by session musicians including Charlie McCoy and Harold Bradley. Recording sessions moved fast, often calling different keys for different vocalists on the same day. A key-agnostic notation meant musicians could follow a chart without rewriting it — the producer simply announced the key and everyone played accordingly.

Numbers 1 through 7 correspond to the seven scale degrees of the major scale. Minor chords receive an “m” suffix (e.g. 6m for the relative minor), and 7th chords add the number (e.g. 57 for the dominant 7th). A progression of 1 — 5 — 6m — 4is one of the most common in contemporary worship music, recognisable across countless songs regardless of the key they're sung in.

A capo is a clamp that attaches across all strings of a guitar at a chosen fret, effectively raising the pitch of every open string by one semitone per fret. This lets guitarists play their familiar open-position chord shapes (G, C, D, Em, Am) while sounding in a higher key. Capos are common in folk, worship, country, and pop music.

How do I transpose chords without knowing music theory?

What does transposing up 2 semitones mean?
A semitone is the smallest interval in Western music — the distance between any two adjacent keys on a piano, including black keys. Transposing up 2 semitones shifts every chord two steps higher in pitch. A song originally in C major becomes D major: C → D, Am → Bm, F → G, G → A. The harmonic structure is identical; only the absolute pitch level is higher.
Is using a capo the same as transposing chords?
A capo and written transposition both change the sounding key, but they work differently. A capo physically raises the pitch of all strings so you can use the same chord shapes in a new key — the written chord names stay unchanged. Written transposition rewrites every chord name to match the new key. Use a capo when you want to keep familiar shapes; use written transposition when writing charts for mixed ensembles, or when everyone needs to read the same new key.
How do I find the original key of a song?

Can I transpose minor chords and seventh chords?
Yes, absolutely. What is the difference between C# and Db?
C# and Db are the same pitch — the black key between C and D on a piano. This is called enharmonic equivalence. The difference is purely notational and depends on the musical key. Sharp keys (G, D, A, E, B) conventionally use C#; flat keys (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db) use Db. The sound is identical, but using the wrong spelling can make chord charts harder to read. How do I transpose chords for ukulele?
Ukulele uses the same chord names and music theory as guitar, so transposing works exactly the same way. Paste your chord sheet, choose the target semitone shift, and copy the output. Can I use the Nashville Number System for any key?
Yes — that's the whole point of NNS. Because it uses scale-degree numbers (1–7) rather than absolute note names, a chart written in NNS works in any key. A '1 4 5' progression is I IV V whether you're playing in C, F, Bb, or E. Why do some transpositions use sharps and others use flats?
Whether a transposed chord name uses a sharp or flat depends on the conventions of the target key. Keys with sharps in their signature (G, D, A, E, B) use sharp notation for chords. Keys with flats (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db) use flat notation. If your output shows A# instead of Bb, toggle the Flats button for cleaner, more conventional notation. As a rule of thumb: if your target key has a black-key tonic (like Bb or Eb), switch to flats.
